Surviving the Summer Heat
Summer in Australia: whether we love the heat or hate the heat, we all need to know how to manage the sun and take care of our skin. And cope with insect bites, sunburn, and rashes caused by too much sand in the swimsuit.

Calendulas or marigolds take their name from the Latin ‘calendae’, the first day of the Roman month, perhaps because marigolds bloom most months of the year. Their common name, marigold, may come from Mary’s gold, referring to their colour and to the Virgin Mary. Frequently used in herbal medicine to reduce inflammation and to soothe or treat wounds or skin problems, such as nappy rash, calendulas are also used in beauty products and hair rinses. Gardeners plant marigolds in vegetable beds, particularly near tomatoes, to deter insect pests.
